How it crops
The top ~250px is covered by the profile name and close button; the bottom ~250px by the reply field and, on some posts, stickers or links.
Phones taller than 9:16 can show extra background fill around the frame — centering key content avoids surprises across devices.
Common mistakes
- Placing a logo right at the very top edge, where the username and close button sit over it.
- Putting a call-to-action at the very bottom, underneath the reply bar.

Does it have to be a photo, or can I use video?
Both work — Stories support static JPG/PNG as well as video.
What happens if my image isn't 9:16?
Instagram fits it into the frame with background fill, or crops it, depending how far off the ratio is — designing natively at 9:16 avoids both.
