How it crops

Square performs the most predictably across both the profile grid and the single-post view; portrait (4:5) shows larger in-feed but crops shorter in the grid.

Whichever ratio you choose, keep it consistent across a whole carousel — Instagram center-crops any slide that doesn't match the first image's ratio.

Common mistakes
  • Mixing aspect ratios within a single carousel, causing inconsistent crops from slide to slide.
  • Uploading content taller than 4:5 and letting Instagram crop it down, rather than composing for it directly.
FAQ

Do I have to pick one ratio for my whole account?

No — each post can use a different supported ratio; consistency only matters within a single carousel.

What if my photo is naturally 4:3, like from a DSLR?

Instagram crops it to fit whichever ratio you publish at, typically trimming the top and bottom for a square post.
